Horses on the Lake Road

I would like to assure the community that we recognize and understand everyone’s concern with regards to livestock on the roads. This project, like our situation with dogs, is not a Chief & Council issue (even though we are leading some initiatives), it is a community issue.

As we all know, the horses and cattle belong to a number of people and not just one individual.  We have spoken to a few of the Stockmen one on one and we are looking at a fencing project.

I would everyone in the community to talk to the stockmen and encourage them to please lock up their stock.  I do know that the Stockman’s Association  struggle with people using quads in the back field, cutting fences and leaving the gates un-locked.  We have people picking mushrooms and leaving gates open and I’m sure there are other people using the back fields for various reasons who also leave gates open.

It’s difficult to pin-point who owns what out there.  Currently most of our stockmen do NOT brand their animals which we are trying to encourage. We don’t want get rid of all our horses and cattle and we would like to continue encouraging our members to live off the land, and raise animals.  We really need to work with Stockman’s Association with fencing.

If you have any ideas or suggestions for this problem please feel free to email me.  I am in continuous communication with most of the Stockmen.  In the meantime please be sure to drive cautiously along the lake road and through our community.  It’s especially difficult to see on the lake road at the moment as there are no lines painted yet and it is very dark at night.  Please be extremely careful.

Thank you all for your patience.

Exciting Opportunity for Lil’wat Youth

This message was forwarded by Rohan Stritch who visited with Lil’wat Elders in September.  This is a great opportunity for our youth to travel to Africa and do some great work.

In partnership with the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA), the Victoria International Development Education Association (VIDEA) will be coordinating 10 International Aboriginal Youth Internships in 2012! Following a training and orientation component spent in Victoria, British Columbia, interns will travel to Uganda and Zambia to work with grassroots development organizations.

Interns will receive a modest living allowance including living expenses, food, and accommodation. The interns’ travel, visa, and vaccination costs will be covered. The program start date is January, 2012, and lasts for 6 months.

Application is simple! Visit www.videa.ca for full details. Deadline to apply October 31st

Thanks to Sylvia Dan for this pic of the paving progress.
Reminder to all that the lot will be CLOSED tonight so if you are coming to Ullus for Bingo please park by the Old Band Office and follow the path.

WATER ISSUE UPDATE

Áma sn’án’atcw.

First of all we’d like to thank everyone for continuing to conserve water overnight.  We were hoping that we’d be able to announce a return to normal yesterday afternoon but there were some complications with the electrical installation of the new pump and the situation had to be monitored all night to ensure that the pump continued to run.  Many thanks to Stan Lester who went out to check on the pump every couple of hours!

The tank is now at 4.7m which is almost full.   The pump continued to work through the night and there did not appear to be any problems however the electrical situation required a work around which will need to be corrected this morning.  For this reason we are not yet fully lifting the Conservation Notice.

As soon as we are sure the pump is working properly we will let the community know.  Thanks again for your patience and cooperation

Ullus Paving Set for Tomorrow - Wednesday October 26

This is a notice to the staff and visitors of the Ullus Community Complex that the final paving of the Ullus Parking Lot will take place tomorrow.  Once the asphalt is down it will need to settle overnight.

Please use alternate parking by the Old Band Office and walk in from that side of the building tomorrow to avoid disrupting the work across the lot.

We thank everyone for your cooperation and for your patience over the past few weeks.

WATER SHORTAGE UPDATE

Further to this notice we can now confirm that the replacement pump will not be installed until later this afternoon.

(Click ‘View Post’ from Facebook)

Stan Lester and his crew have been working all morning to refill the tank but it is only just getting filled faster than it’s being emptied.  Please contact friends and relatives and ask that they continue to reduce water usage until this afternoon.  We realize that people have been trying to prepare for this water shortage by filling up buckets and basins but this could actually cause problems if the system starts to fill with air.  We have also recieved questions about hot water tanks.  If you are concerned about your tank you can turn it off using the switch on your electrical panel (it should be labelled) however, if we continue to reduce and limit our general water consumption (this includes using hot water), the tanks should remain at a safe level.

Bottled water has been made available at the Tsipun and as previously announced, the Ullus showers and washrooms are always open to the community.

Again, we ask that you circulate this information to friends and family either by email, phone or text message.  It’s really important that we do what we can to maintain the water system until the pump is replaced later today.   Everyone is working hard to ensure that water service is replaced as soon as possible and we need the community to work with us to ensure that our system does not get damaged in the meantime.

While the phones are still down at Ullus you can direct people to call the Lands office at 604 894 2333 if they have any questions.

WATER RESTRICTION FOR XIT’OLACW STILL IN PLACE

The tank at Xit’olacw is nearly empty and we have had reports that people living on the higher roads (away from the tank) have been out of water as of early this morning.  Right now there is a small amount of water at the school but this will not last long.

We are asking that people living at Xit’olacw stop all water usage until we can confirm that the pump has been replaced.  There is water available at Ullus and the showers and washroom facilities are open to the community so please come down.

A team is on site to repair the damaged pump and water tankers are on thier way to refill the tank.  Bottles of water are also being distributed to various locations throughout the community.

Please try not to use any water until at least noon today.  We know this is difficult but it’s very important that our health centre and school have access to water.

As soon as the pump has been repaired we will send out alerts via the website, email and text message.  Please share this information with those who may not be connected.
